Yello Belly Drag Strip is the oldest street outlaws track in the country. Racing year round four days a week
Yello Belly Drag Strip traces its roots back to the early 1950s. In the early 1950s, a group of adventurous young car enthusiasts in the Grand Prairie, Texas area, just outside of Dallas, began racing in the sandy river bottom near the Trinity River. These races were an exciting pastime for the group, but they often drew the attention of local police, who would shut them down.
The group found an unlikely ally in O.L. Nelms, an eccentric millionaire who owned the property where they raced. Nelms, who was a frequent spectator at the races, was persuaded by the racers to build a proper drag strip so they could continue their hobby without interference. In 1955, Nelms built an asphalt drag strip, which was operated by volunteers who shared his passion for racing.
The drag strip was christened “Yello Belly Drag Strip,” a playful jab at Nelms’ teasing of the racers’ perceived lack of bravery. The name stuck, and the strip became a popular destination for racers and spectators alike. A small admission fee of 50 cents was charged, and the strip opened every Sunday at noon, closing at dusk.
Today, Yello Belly Drag Strip is a family-run business that has been operating continuously since 1955. It has become a beloved institution for many racing fans, with some boasting of a three or four-generation history with the strip, either as fans or racers.

So much fun.
Wasn't convinced before going, but loved every part of this. Full range of cars, from inquisitive car owner, to basic amateur then highly invested! All queuing up patiently for their moment. Twitch broadcaster at the lights provides a running commentary to all his followers. Security at the gates made this feel all very safe. Perhaps a competitive air boils over on busier nights, but not for us. Paid one guy in a Corvette who let us ride with him a few times! So much fun.Peter Buckland MerrettGoogle Review -
I must say… this place is legit!
I must say… this place is legit! I’ve been here now 3 times… for the armature night on Thursday…Saturday night-morning party… and motorcycle 🏍️ drag racing….everyone is well mannered and behaved so far. The owners are awesome! Harley and his daughter are the only 2 I’ve met so far. They are very nice and hard workers! It’s amazing! Love working EMS here on the ambulance and here for when something terrible happens. This is a good place to come out to and have fun!Fireman Chef GeoffGoogle Review -
True gritty drag strip
True gritty drag strip that has street vibes and feel. If you're all about safety etc. then that's up to you but if you just got a street car and don't want to wear a fire suit and helmet then don't. They don't make you. Don't race and never been able to stand right on the strip and watch and get the true feel of horsepower and the thrill up close and personal then this is the place 100% for you!Wess CoxGoogle Review
